How do I build a steady and professional computer repair service business?

Posted on September 25th, 2009 by admin

I am a professional pc technician and I love this job and want to be very good at it.
I have started a computer repair service in a little town of 10000 people
and I have got some customers
and I get calls every week
It is not yet what I expected but I showed me what is it like.
Now I wanna go one step ahead in order to gain more customers and yet it is risky but I do not have much to loose so I am going to open a store in a bigger town and do more ads and marketing.
so things can be better ?
Now what Do I need to do in order to get the new store and how to make it look like and what to try to get things up and running
than you in advance

Read Ken’s reply and heed the warning. What you are missing is the advantage you already have - paying customers. Do you have any of them on a service contract?

My tech guy offered one and yes, I took him up on it. Every month I can take my computer in to be ‘dusted’, bench checked for any potential problems and it keeps me from having to worry about it.

Maybe you can offer something similar to your customers. They know you and your work, allow them to promote you. With a service agreement you are maintaining their systems, and giving them something to talk about.

I know this seems simple but how many of your customers use email? Do you have their email addresses to let them know about the latest virus scams, how to get better use of their systems or send notices when they need to upgrade some old software?

Let’s do some basic, simple math:
You have 10 customers. They each pay you maybe $5 a month for a service agreement that includes system cleaning, driver testing and something else that costs you nothing except time.

That’s $50 a month, not a big deal right? Now what if only 2 of them require bench time, hardware upgrades or complete system restore a month….get the picture?

Check what others in your town are doing, or not doing. You build loyalty to you, increase your business revenue and work to build from 10 regular customers to 20, 30, 100?

You get calls every week?! Turn them into customers with your maintenance program and get those emails telling them helpful things they can do themselves.

My tech guy does and even though I’ve been using computers since the 1980’s, the tips he sends mean a lot because I use my computer for my business.

Just my two cents.

What courses or cirriculum would you take in college to repair computers?

Posted on September 25th, 2009 by admin

His goal is to open his own computer repair shop in the future.Would he need a degree or just classes

A degree might help him get knowledge, but experience is what he needs. There are a lot of books that he can read to learn how to do this. You dont need a college degree to repair computers and to start your own business. You only need a degree if you want to work for a company or for somebody else.

How much does it cost to repair a computer?

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 by admin

Hi,
Having constant rebooting problems while playing games, I have to take the computer to a technician to diagnose it… However, I’m wondering about the cost, normally how much would it cost?
And what if we have some really confidential files on the hard disk, is there a possible chance that it will be stolen or looked?
And would you suggest GeekSquad or not?

Thanks

I used to work for Geek Squad so I’m not sure if the pricing is still the same, but it used to be:

$59 Diagnostic (if the computer is covered under 1 yr mfg-warranty or service plan its free)
$29 PC optimization- If the problem is something small and software related, this service can fix it, as well as tune up your computer

Other services reach $199 and up (diagnostic included)… This does not take into account the price of parts either…
GS quality varies from store to store, but the one I worked at was very good, everyone knew there stuff, and customers were consistently satisfied.

As far as the confidential files go, the privacy policy of Geek Squad guarantees your privacy, but says something to the effect that ‘confidential’ files might be seen by technicians while performing services you have requested (highly unlikely, yet possible). However copying and/or taking files from a customer’s computer without permission is a violation of Geek Squad’s policies and the technician would be terminated on the spot.

Is conficker a way for computer services to sell more anti-virus products?

Since most of the methods for defending against it are free and available easily I would say no.

I just got my computer back from the repair shop, and the batteries still won’t charge. What’s the problem?

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 by admin

The shop said that the AC adapter (the brick looking thing) was the problem, not the batteries (what I thought was the problem). I purchased a new AC adapter for $90, but my two batteries still refuse to charge; the computer doesn’t even acknowledge one of the batteries being in it.

What could be the problem? Could there be something that I am forgetting to do?

this is a laptop right?? try plugging in the ac to your laptop and take the battery out… it should still work because the power’s primary source is the ac unit first. If that doesn’t work, then something might be wrong with your pc, which would really suck. IF all else fails, just take it back to the place that "repaired" it first and show them first hand and see what they say.

Computer Repair Business start-up help?

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 by admin

I’m planning on starting up a computer repair/computer services business. I will do web design as well, but I’m only wanting to work with local folk and people within like 10 - 15 miles from my home.

I’m having a very difficult time determining how I should charge. I don’t want to do hourly as I’m worried that would scare people away. Should I charge one-time fees for basic types of services, or just do quotes (since some clients may have more or less money)? I want to charge less than the typical geeky computer service franchises and really do a good job for the customer.

And for getting those customers, is the best way to get a soliciting permit and do cold sales door to door in my neigborhood? Telemarketing? Hire a sales team? Or just post in all the local news papers and yellow pages and hope people call? There ARE a couple of people I got through friend referrals, which is good I guess, but it’s not enough to pay more than a cable bill.

If anyone of you are experienced in this area, or just wise with decision making, I am all ears and would love to hear your suggestions and entertain all ideas.

Thanks

What is the best way to advertise a small business selling computer serices and repairs!? Without costing lots

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 by admin

Any more information as i have TRIED leaflets and it really doesnt work for me..
I have done leaflets through doors about 4000+ and not a single call… My leaflets are really well designed. www.techni-phobia.co.uk is my site and you can see we know how to design. I used "A.I.D.A" formula but its not going well.

I was always told the best advertising is word of mouth. its the strongest and most assuring for a customer. I think also to start off, newspaper adverts, pin boards in colleges community halls etc, and flyering outside somewhere that isnt corporate but depends on a lot of computers. if something goes wrong and they know you by face and that youre near by they would shout you in a fix instead of waiting a few hours for a technician. make your presence known by people and businesses. do flyering but go into stores and offices and ASK if you can give them one of your flyers. even if the company doesnt use it, individuals might. be smart about it and spend a bit of time doing it. be polite and dont push too hard if they look busy. get your face known and for gods sake, NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK!!!

best of luck to you!!
