Computer Maintenance Help!!?

Posted on October 21st, 2009 by admin

When i run maintenance programs on my computer i usually just do it randomly. Is there like an order in which i should run my maintenance programs to better clean and optimize my system?
For example these are the programs i run. (disk cleaner, spyware/adware remover, registry cleaner, registry defrag, 1-click all-purpose cleaner, virus scanner, and finally i defrag the computer)

Looks like you’re doing pretty well in that aspect.
You might want to add ‘check disk’ to your 1X/3 months, just for keeping the OS in shape.
Also, one disk performance item is to ‘compress contents’ and ‘allow index service’. These help optimize file recovery speed & save disk space.
Start> my computer> right click ‘c’ drive> properties> general tab: here check both boxes & ‘OK’.

Don’t freak out: it may say days or more to run, but this time drops dramatically as the process advances. Just walk away and let ‘er run for the duration: it will self close when done.
Depending on the files & sizes, it may take several hours to do (maybe do it at night before bed?).

Computer Repair Tech Salary? Please help.?

Posted on October 19th, 2009 by admin

Does anybody know the average salary for a computer repair technician in new york if your a+ certified? i’ve always heard from everyone that they make great money but im not sure who gets confused between this profession, and computer engineering.
Any information is needed, thank you.

I live in a small town in Iowa , and am a self taught computer tech ..I never got Microsoft Certified or A+ certified ..To me those certifications mean nothing ..My going rates for repairs is between $30 and $100 per hour depending on the job ..And when I advertised I got that regularly ,,I would expect in New York , you could possibly ad another $10 to $20 an hour on that $30 an hour ..If you were self employed .In New York , competition is probably fairly strong for getting into a big office as a in house tech , and most are probably making an entry level salary of at least $20 an hour ..I am just guessing though ..

Question about computer maintenance and problems. 10 points for clear and helpful answer?

Posted on October 19th, 2009 by admin

1. If I turn off the automatic updater for my AntiVirus program and use manual updating method instead, would this lessen the amount of processes that the computer uses?

2. I have a settings.ini error which states that "settings.ini is being used by another process. " How do I fix this?
and yes, I have already tried to search for the elusive process and still don’t know what it is.

If you switch automatic updates off then it should lessen the process time but it may not be noticeable.

To delete the file download Microsoft Process Explorer from Microsoft for free, run it and click on the find menu and click find handle or DLL. Search for settings.ini and you will see a list of handles to that file.

Double click on the right one and the main window will show and the handle will be highlighted, right click it and select ‘close handle’ once the handle is closed you can delete the file.

Computer repair shop scamming me?

Posted on October 17th, 2009 by admin

Well i know for sure my laptops GPU is broken and the shop i bought it from say I need a report for it. I took it to one shop and they confirmed it was the GPU but they don’t do reports. I took it to another one for a report and they say it is a software issue but I know it isn’t because i have reinstalled a million times. The second company made me pay 28 pounds for looking at it and wanted 50 for repairing it! I know they are scamming me but i cant prove it without carrying out the repair

Possible they are scamming but I dont belive that good shops open to rip customers off as they are there to do continuous business and hopefully aware that bad news travel fast. So, unless some do a full diagnosis hard to say what is wrong. Next time, please provide more details about your problem so people who respond have better idea. You could have hardware failure in which case you would not be able to see windows. A message will display way before hand. You could have bad disk drives, controllers, video card, RAM issues and even failed mother board. But if you can see windows and it keeps crashign it could be software related or bad device drivers.
