I am 14, live in a small town and recently have thought fixing computers for profit (virus and software issues, not hardware).
Im just wondering if I would need a business license considering Im so young and wont be making all that much?
Also any entrepreneurial tips would be great!
Thanks, Kylar
Yes U need an occupational license through your local City Hall, but…………. I would not do that because of the exposure. Just stay under the radar & do good work.
I studied electronics in a vocational high school, I’m going to study computer repair for 8 months in an institute and then I’m going to university to study business administration…so could I start my own computer repair business when I’m done studying? would I be making good money? and what are the things I should do to start the business once I’m done studying
No, absolutely not.
In 1995 I could charge $200 an hour to repair a PC, because a mid-range PC cost around $2500 dollars. Today, when you can buy a mid-range desktop for $300 from Walmart, you just can’t justify $200 an hour. No one is going to pay you more to fix the computer than what they spent on it.
Also, back in the mid 90’s if you had a degree in computing, you could write your own ticket. Then, everyone decided that computers was where the money was and every man and his dog enrolled in computer courses.
So you pay $50,000 or more for four years of college, then enter a field where there are literally hundreds of applicants for every available job.
Basically, get into the computer repair business only if you feel like working your ass off and making about the same as a McDonald’s line cook.
I’m willing to spend around $200. I’ve browsed a few online, but am having trouble deciding.
1) What’s the best (i.e., most sensitive and prolific, in terms of diagnostics)?
2) What should I look for when purchasing?
Something like this is very personal. I suggest you get someone to inquire of him what he would recommend. That way you get an idea of his thinking. Honestly if you are going to spend the money on it then it really should be what he wants.
My clients are in multiple cities and I do go there to do repairs
None, you need a license for your home office so the town or city can OK it if there is going to be a good amount of people coming and going to your residents 2nd you will need a license to open a bank checking account, but other then that if you work out of you car and get paid cash you need nothing.
Go to you local office of license and tell them what you do and tell the you want a DBA license for your home address and that your clients are most out of state. Now you have a license to work out of your home for tax reason and you can open a bank checking account in a company name.
I’m looking for some inexpensive but effective ways I can attract more customers to my business. Any ideas?
I heard some good things about Premiere Ads Online. They will do all your advertising for you for less than you can put it in the newspaper yourself! They advertise you online on different sites and I think they start at only $15 and that’s for a whole month of advertising. They will keep you local or get you national exposure depending on what type of business you are in. Their website is www.premiereadsonline.com . Might be worth checking out for the price!

Sales Tax
Individuals or businesses that sell tangible personal property to the final consumer are required to remit a 6% sales tax on their taxable retail sales to the State of Michigan. Sales of electricity, natural or artificial gas and home heating fuels for residential use are taxed at the 4% rate. Michigan does not allow city or local units to impose sales or use taxes.
Unless you sale computer parts, you would not need to charge them sales tax.
(For instance, your clients bought parts from the local retail store. They already have been charged sales tax on the items. You will not need to charge them sales tax for the services that you provide. If you got Sales Tax License and you sale parts, you will need to add sales tax on top of it- unless it is out of state. Any property which goes with the customer in connection with the repair or service is considered a sale at retail and subject to sales tax.)
Repairers and servicers.
Rule 67. (1) Persons regularly and exclusively engaged in the business of
repairing, improving, or altering tangible personal property owned by
others, in which work the value of the material used is incidental or
negligible, render a nontaxable service. Sales of equipment, materials,
and supplies to such persons are taxable. For example, sales to the
following are taxable: Bootblacks, cleaners and dyers, garment repairers,
jewelry and watch repairers, linen suppliers and laundries, radio
repairers (radio tubes not being considered repair material), refrigerator
repairers, small tool sharpeners, and welders.
(2) Sales for resale to a person who has a sales tax license and an
established business of one of the following types are not taxable, but
sales to such a person of all other tangible personal property are
taxable: Automobile repairers or garages, electrical repairers, machinery
repairers, upholsterers and furniture repairers, and shoe repairers.
(3) Persons selling tangible personal property in addition to providing
labor or service shall obtain a sales tax license and pay the tax on their
sales of tangible personal property, including such property sold in
connection with repair work. When both labor and service charges are
involved in repair work for others, the retailer shall separately itemize
the amount charged for the tangible personal property sold; otherwise, the
tax shall apply to the total gross proceeds.
(4) A person engaged in a repair or service business not specifically
covered may write the department for information.

It would be a city-wide 7 store business with locations around the entire city. It would also have a central distribution center.
The population is estimated at 1,000,000 people.
My family owns 7 city-wide stores and I’d like to drop in a city-wide computer repair business. They may give me the go ahead and id like to start working on the business plan tomorrow.
Perspectives?
Also, do you ever get your computer repaired?
Sounds good to me.Good luck.
I have 8 years IT experience and would like to start a small part time repair business to make some spare money. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting it started? A couple specific things I would like to know about are:
1. How should I market my business in a small town of about 8,000 people.
2. What do I need to do as far as taxes go? I plan on making no more than $5,000 per year
3. Any other suggestions?
Buy a magnetic sign for the door of your car and start working. Put up flyers at grocery stores. The IRS will figure out your tax. No city tax if you make less than $30,000. You can call the City Treasurer to confirm and they will give you advice about any permits or places you must register.
Do a great job and charge less than Geek Squad..
