Can the place that repaired my computer have the right to auction off my computer?

Posted on April 27th, 2010 by admin

I went to this computer repair place to fix my computer. the cost of the the repairs came out to be 380 dollars. I payed 100 dollars as a down payment its been a couple of months since this payment other expense unexpectedly came up. I recently call them and I find out my computer is no longer there so do they have the right to do that.

Yes they do. Most repair shops have something in the fine print or on a sign behind the desk stating that repaired items left for more than a certain length of time can be sold to offset the cost of the repairs performed.

If one repairs the computer using bootable windows cd, will the data be lost or saved?

Posted on March 11th, 2010 by admin

My computer has stopped recognizing any modem and wont let any modem be installed. I have the bootable windows xp cd, if I try to repair my current windows installation using the cd, will the data stored, all files and folders, be lost or will they still remain there after rapair is complete?

You can repair your windows installation without loosing anything. First try this solution. Go to start…run then type in cmd and press enter then type in sfc/scannow and press enter. Have the windows CD ready as it may ask you to put it in the drive. If that doesn’t solve your problem leave the CD in the drive and restart the computer and when it says press any key to boot from CD do so. Let it start the set up. When you see the first press R to run the repair or recovery console ignore that and press enter to continue. When you finally see press F8 to install windows press it. It will then say please wait while we check to see if any previous versions of windows are found on this system. When it finds one it will give you the option to press R and try to repair it. Do so and you are good to go. You will not loose any data if all runs correctly.

being charged for computer repairs when nothing has been done?

Posted on February 22nd, 2010 by admin

my PC has been having BSODs ever scince i got it.
i sent it back for repairs 3 times yet nothing has changed first time they reinstalled windows XP costed $250 (due to purchase of XP) and i didn’t expect it to be fixed, second time they reinstalled windows costed $90 and they just ran simple diagnostics, third time they did the excact same thing, the computer has costed $1000 and $500 has been wasted of ‘fixing’ it.

is there anything i can do to ensure i get it fixed if i send it back again, i dont want them charging me that i can do in the comfort of my own home.
each time its a different message, it happens when ever it feels like it…

it appears tht you are not comunicating to the fixit guy, he is ripping you off blind because you are letting him.

You need to observe the computer, research for possible fixes here in answers to get clued up and familiar on what to talk about. When you take it to the shop you need to be clear and consise in what you want fixed, so you pay for it to be fixed.

They probably charged you 250 to put XP in because that is what you probably agreed for them to do. Meaning , yes put XP on thanks, with no memntion of actually fixing it.

So have a look at yourself and go forth young man.

I just got a package to send my computer in to HP for repairs, am I supposed to open the packing list thing?

Posted on February 18th, 2010 by admin

I mean the little pocket on the side with the orange tape that says "PACKING LIST ENCLOSED".

I have sent my HP Laptop in twice, I opened the packing list on the outside and all it said was 1 box, and packing support. Take it off, there should be a return UPS sticker in it, make sure you use it over the one on the outside of the box. It has very easy to follow instructions. You should have no problems. Just make sure to include everything they ask for. I always write out a detailed sheet of what is wrong with it and enclose it with the computer.

Hope this helps.

where can i download notes on Computer Repairs?

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by admin

i want to know some basic skill to repair computers.

Okay i’ll tell you what i know, what i mainly do on computers i am asked to fix.

First off, Cleaning the junk
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Ccleaner Deletes all their old internet history, Temp files. All the garbage on their computer this will clean up the harddrive and help the computer to run faster, in ccleaner there is a registry tab click on hit and hit Scan, then fix all errors. usually finds 100-500 Errors on the computers i scan

Next is to scan for Viruses
http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Malware bytes anti malware is free and easy to use, one of the best anti Virus programs i know of. Its not a constant protection its just a scan to find possible infection carrying files and Already infected areas of the computer and remove them. Last time i used this was on one of my best friends GF’s computer. Scanned it and came up with 150 viruses. lol one guy i helped came up with 500+.
Now if your helping someone and just want to give them a working computer and walk away one of the highest rated Anti Virus programs is (no NOT avg) its Avira.
http://www.free-av.com/
It will bring up a little message saying its detected a virus if you’ve got one, just tell them if they ever see it hit deny access. Simple as that. This is nice because its 100% free and Works As good if not better then Norton and McAfee, It also uses very little ram so it won’t slow your computer like Norton and McAfee do.

Fixing the Startup Issues.
Okay just about every program you install over the life of your computer wants to start WITH your computer. This will Cause a Swarm of information when you first start and often causes a ridiculous amount of lag. This can be fixed by windows simply, I also have a program. but for now the windows way. Go to the start Menu, And click on RUN. Type in
MSCONFIG
this will bring up Microsoft configuration thinger. lol Click on the tab labeled STARTUP you can look thru and decide what you want to disable or Just hit DISABLE all, Everything in the list is not Vital To your computer’s well being. In this list will be things like AIM, MSN, etc garbage you don’t need slowing you down. Of course this dose not permanently stop them from starting, For instance aim always trys to start when you start your computer, so if you disable it now, and then later use the program, it will try an start with your computer again. This is where my program comes in
http://www.disablestartup.com/
Disable Startup Is simple, install it and hit on the bottom start with windows, now up top tell it to not allow anything from this point on to start with Windows Do not give warning, This is very good If the person you’re helping isn’t so great with computers it will just stop EVERYTHING and lets them not worry about it, They will just have to open it by themselves if they want it.

Last but not least some computers you come across are to far gone to fix, The best thing to do with them is to just to a Fresh Reinstall of windows, You can either go the legal way of buying the operating system or torrent it, Im not endorsing any illegal activities just stating your options. (must say or they’ll ban me… AGAIN.. -_-)
use Alcohol 120% for Burning any ISO’s (digital Images) you have.
now all that i’ve told you so far, if i was to go into detail of how to get a Operating system and Install a new one on someones computer would take up atleast as much if not more uhm Paragraphs. So i’ll Assume you know a bit and leave you with a few pointers. (if you don’t understand what im talking about don’t worry about it) When your installing the Operating system they’ll ask you if you want to Quick Format or Full Reformat the Harddrive. Quick does not delete the garbage they may have had on the harddrive before, So say they used 50gb of their 100gb harddrive, if you do a Quick Format they’re only going to be able to use the 50gb remaining, the FULL reformat Erases everything on the harddrive and starts fresh, But Can take a while, as for mine being 360gb it takes upto 2hours to completely reformat it.
Once you have the operating system installed You’ll need to install drivers.
download this disk using a BitTorrent client
http://btjunkie.org/torrent/75000-drivers-for-Windows-2000-XP-and-Vista/679645c72bcfc75d28f788beee73fe59d0a4e8f694e7
its a ISO image filled with 75000 Drivers, all free all legal. Drivers let you computer Recognize things. Graphics drivers, Ethernet Drivers(for internet) etc all of which you very much need this CD makes it simple. once you’ve installed the operating system go to Start, hit control Panel and go to System. goto Hardware tab and click on Device manager, now if any drivers are out of place They’ll appear with Yellow Question marks i believe.. Anyway, mm this is somewhat shady in the back of my mind. lol Double click or Right click on it and hit Update Drivers. i believe, They’ll ask you if you want to search on the internet for drivers and tick no and click Next. i belie

which is the best tool kit for computer repairs and network?

Posted on February 14th, 2010 by admin

i want to buy a tool kit i can use for computer repairs as well as network. i do not mind the cost i just want the best tool kit.

There are several ways to go here. I’ve been doing repairs for almost 20 yrs. after using several kits I’ve come to the conclusion that a kit is the wrong way to go. Every kit has at least one tool that’s not right.
Get a Letherman Keep it with you at all times.
Find a well made bit screwdriver.
Network tools are more depending on money and need. A simple $50 net connection tool will usually do the job. But you can spend thousands on network sniffers.
Get all other tools as you need them. That way you can pick a good tool and only what you actually use.

How can I find a free downloadable computer cleaner? Everything I can find only does scans, and not repairs?

Posted on February 12th, 2010 by admin

What I am in need of is something that not only scans the computer, but something that also fixes damaged areas and cleans unused areas. Everything I can find only scans.

Go to this website http://www.stevengould.org and download "cleanup". This is a free and aw some program. It is really small file and work wonders. You can just run a regular cleanup and it will wipe out all the junk temp files and cookies.and it frees up all the junk left behind from surfing the Internet.. You will be totally surprised on how much space it will free up. You can also change the settings and can set it to totally wipe out your drive if you are getting rid of your computer or doing a total reinstall too
