Do you think computer repair people might look through my computers data?

Posted on June 8th, 2010 by admin

I wanna get my laptop fixed, but im afraid the computer tech guy is going to look through my stuff. I have online banking info, personal pictures of me and my gf, porn and a bunch of other stuff stored on there. How can I be sure that no one will look through my harddrive while my laptop’s getting fixed?

Go to a reputable shop. You don’t need to worry too much unless you have child porn in your computer. Besides, they don’t have business in snooping around your hard drive’s contents. It will hurt their reputation and business if people would know what they do. In your situation, if you think your sensitive data are at risk then take out your hard disk and use an external hard disk enclosure. Attach it to another computer and MOVE (not just copy) your data there. After that, use a program that will securely wipe the free space in your laptop’s hard drive so they can’t be recovered. Here’s a good program:

Remember, simply erasing your sensitive data may not be enough as the tech people can use undelete programs to recover them.

what a-levels do i need to repair/rebuild computers?

Posted on June 2nd, 2010 by admin

I’m taking a buisiness A-level aswell because i want to be able to start my own a business around computers, possibly fixing and rebuilding old computers/laptops into new ones. BUT i want all he qualifications so i can start small and build myself up

There is no money in "rebuilding" old computers.

Small non-branded computer repair shops generally go out of business very quickly.

Does Dell repair their computers now?

Posted on May 22nd, 2010 by admin

Several years ago I purchased a Dell & I accidently pulled on the monitor cord and it broke a connection at the jack. I paid over $1,500 for this computer and Dell wouldn’t fix it nor could anyone else because their were no parts available. I was told Dell don’t repair computers they replace them but only if its under warranty.

if you broke the port for the monitor just get a new graphics card so that you dont have to deal with dell and its shitty tech support

So if I want to repair or build computers for a living, what would I have to go to collage for?

I can’t keep my hands off the stuff and I figured if I’m going to a have a career, I mind as well enjoy it right? Being 17, I’m not sure what field I would have to learn in to get such a job. I searched the internet with very little luck. I thinks its Information in Technology, but I’m unsure.

Thank you for any help.

Hey man this is exactly what I’m going to school for now. I also have a part time job at a local hospital doing computer work. Your right its called Information Technology. For short it’s called IT. There are A TON of different IT jobs. I’m going to school at a technical college and getting my associates degree and my program is called IT Computer Support Specialist. Now you will learn more than just ripping computers apart and putting them back together, your’ll learn a little about programming, operating systems, IT training, software applications, Web development and so on. There are two hardware classes in my program, intro and advanced. They taught us how to build a computer in intro to hardware. I think its an excellent program because you learn a little about every aspect of the IT field. I definitely think you should get at least a 2 year degree somewhere. So go to your career center at your high school and talk to them about the different tech schools in your area or go online and do some research yourself. IT is a GREAT field to get into, even with the down economy everyone is still looking for IT guys. The pay is pretty decent as well. I hope this helps! email me at kbardouche@gmail.com if there’s anything else I can do.

Can i repair computers legally?

Posted on March 29th, 2010 by admin

I am really good with computers and a friend of mine suggested that i put up an advertisement in some local shops offering to fix people’s computers. I thought i could charge them a small amount of money to give myself some spare cash over the summer holidays. Am 17 and live in Northern Ireland and am just wandering if i can legally do this or if i would need to actually register as a business or whatever? Any advice would be appreciated.

There is no reason why you can’t earn extra cash doing repairs, just remember that you may have declare that income to the inland revenue and at the same time you should make sure you have the relevant insurance either public liability or professional indemnity

I repair computers for the public and how long would you think they would have to come pick up there computer?

Posted on March 27th, 2010 by admin

before it couldnt be reinbursts?

When I worked at the local PC shop, we had a form we printed out for every machine that was checked in. It stated that if you do not pick up your system within 60 days, then the PC becomes property of the store.

This is a legally binding document, so after 2 months then it’s your property.
I suggest typing up such a document and having people sign it before you work on their PC.

What software/hardware do you use to repair other computers?

Posted on March 25th, 2010 by admin

What tools do you people use when you fix other peoples computers? I’m creating a set of tools to use so I am more organized when doing it. I do it now and then for people and I’m gathering different resources for myself to save my self the hassle. If someone can give me some applications/programs they use to fix computers (Even application recommendations), please list them. Thank you.

Boot disks of all kinds (DOS, Windows, BartPE, Ultimate Boot Disk, Linux), Malwarebytes, Avast, CCleaner, MASM (to write and assemble little utilities, as needed), 7-Zip - I usually carry about 32GB of SD cards, all of them bootable.

How many computers does your computer repair store repair per month?

Posted on February 12th, 2010 by admin

Thanks in advance.

There are a good number of variables that go into an answer to your question.

I can tell you that, at the last place I worked, it varied. Holidays were more busy than non-holidays. New virus/malware "outbreaks" also made the amount of machines we worked on rise. It also helped that we did field work for a 60+ mile radius around our store, so that only added to our workload.

In general, the computer department usually cleared between $10k and $20k a month, depending on what was going on in the world of computers at that time.

Maybe you could rephrase your question to be more specific to the information you’re trying to collect?
