what does the computer repair shop do for a basic checkup?

how much training and equipment do you need to do it yourself? today i had a help desk tell me i had the blue screen of death, but it came back on.
Basic checkup deals with things in the order of least obtrusive to most obtrusive. For example:
Turn on - Least obtrusive
to
Re-installing an operating system - very obtrusive
All you have to do is sit down and write a logical order of steps that you think the computer should work. If you encounter an error, stop, don’t just try something to fix it, but actually think about why it happened. If you get an error message, google it, if you need drivers google it, if you can’t work out what that smell is google it.
The truth of the matter is that the IT geeks don’t want you to know that 9/10 issues with any computer can be solved with a bit of internet research. As an IT support officer for 2 years in a High School, you get a lot of very basic errors and the turn around can be merely seconds from receiving a "dead PC" to returning a fully working one.
If you have any specific questions email me at patrickbusby@ymail.com and I’d be glad to help out.
