Why do Zhotkey and Interactive Services boxes pop up on my computer?

Posted on February 24th, 2010 by admin

I’ve been experiencing this problem lately and I can’t figure out what to do. The "Zhotkey" message pops up then disappears. The "Interactive Services" box pops up and I X it out abut it comes right back in a few minutes. When I run my anti-virus program it does not indicate a problem but who knows. Could this mean there’s some sort of malicious or spy device on the computer?

Using Pop-up Blocker
When you install SP2, Pop-up Blocker is turned on in Internet Explorer and set to the medium setting, which means it will block most automatic pop-ups. The default settings for

the pop-up blocker allow you to see pop-ups that are opened when you click a link or button on a Web site. Pop-up Blocker will also play a sound and show the Information Bar

when a pop-up is blocked. You can adjust these settings so that Pop-up Blocker works the way you want it to.
To change Pop-up Blocker settings
1.Open Internet Explorer.
2.On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.

Internet Explorer Tools menu
If you want to see pop-up windows from a specific Web site, type the address (or URL) of the site in the Address of Web site to allow box, and then click Add.
Pop-up Blocker Settings window
Tip To temporarily allow a site to display pop-ups, click the Information Bar when it notifies you that a pop-up has been blocked. Then click Temporarily Allow Pop-ups.
To block pop-ups even if they are launched when you click a link or button on a Web site
1.Open Internet Explorer.
2.On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.
3.Select the High setting in the box near the bottom of the dialog box.
Note If you want to see pop-ups that are blocked when you have this setting turned on, hold down the CTRL key while the window opens.

being charged for computer repairs when nothing has been done?

Posted on February 22nd, 2010 by admin

my PC has been having BSODs ever scince i got it.
i sent it back for repairs 3 times yet nothing has changed first time they reinstalled windows XP costed $250 (due to purchase of XP) and i didn’t expect it to be fixed, second time they reinstalled windows costed $90 and they just ran simple diagnostics, third time they did the excact same thing, the computer has costed $1000 and $500 has been wasted of ‘fixing’ it.

is there anything i can do to ensure i get it fixed if i send it back again, i dont want them charging me that i can do in the comfort of my own home.
each time its a different message, it happens when ever it feels like it…

it appears tht you are not comunicating to the fixit guy, he is ripping you off blind because you are letting him.

You need to observe the computer, research for possible fixes here in answers to get clued up and familiar on what to talk about. When you take it to the shop you need to be clear and consise in what you want fixed, so you pay for it to be fixed.

They probably charged you 250 to put XP in because that is what you probably agreed for them to do. Meaning , yes put XP on thanks, with no memntion of actually fixing it.

So have a look at yourself and go forth young man.

Bid/Proposal For Computer Services for Police/Town Offices?

Posted on February 20th, 2010 by admin

I am about to Bid and Write up a proposal for Computer Services for a Police Station and Town Offices. The problem is, I don’t know how to price or write up a proposal for something like this. They have 4 offices, and a total of 25-30 Users/Computers a couple servers and various printers and other devices. The contract length is said to be 1-3 years.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Speak to other companies who use computers, ring them. It could be just your local supermarket or bank or even another force. Ask plenty of questions. Its all about Market research.

I just got a package to send my computer in to HP for repairs, am I supposed to open the packing list thing?

Posted on February 18th, 2010 by admin

I mean the little pocket on the side with the orange tape that says "PACKING LIST ENCLOSED".

I have sent my HP Laptop in twice, I opened the packing list on the outside and all it said was 1 box, and packing support. Take it off, there should be a return UPS sticker in it, make sure you use it over the one on the outside of the box. It has very easy to follow instructions. You should have no problems. Just make sure to include everything they ask for. I always write out a detailed sheet of what is wrong with it and enclose it with the computer.

Hope this helps.

what qualifications would you need to be computer repair technician?

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by admin

and how long will this take roughly

Most employers want CompTia A+ certification from their entry-level repair techs. http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/a.aspx

Some employers don’t require any certification but those also tend not to pay as well. Some require or prefer at least an associates degree but those jobs usually extend beyond repairs into lower-level network and systems administration functions too.

How long it takes depends entirely on whether you’re a novice or are experienced in computer repair. People with strong experience that also study well can get an A+ certification exam study guide and pass the exam just fine with no classes at all.

Rank beginners that have never seen the inside of a computer and don’t know an ATX from an ETX might need a lot more time.

If you go with the community college degree/certificate route then there are more profitable ways to spend two years than becoming a repair tech (aka bench technician) such as certifying in network admin or systems security.

A degree is usually required for advancement in the IT industry at all levels above CSR/bench tech/help-desk.

Advice re. computer repair shop/faulty laptop?

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by admin

I apologise in advance as this may be a long story.

On 13th October, I took my laptop to a computer repair shop advertising "no fix, no fee" as I was having problems getting the laptop to boot. They were supposed to provide me with a free estimate as to what was causing the problem.

Several weeks passed and I hadn’t heard from them, so decided to try and chase the matter up. I took some time getting a response, due to them ignoring my phonecalls and failing to return any messages I left, and eventually I was told that it was a faulty motherboard, which they were going to replace at a cost of around £90. I agreed that this would be okay and called them (again another couple of weeks later) to see if it was repaired, and if it would be ok for me to collect it.

At this stage, I was told that it had been fixed, and that there was no need for me to collect it - they would deliver it to me that weekend (I received this phonecall on a Thursday/Friday).

I then waited until the Tuesday… still no laptop, and still no phonecall, so again, it took me a considerable amount of time to get a hold of them and when I eventually did, I was told that although the laptop had been repaired, it still wasn’t working, and they would have to contact the manufacturer for a BIOS upgrade. It was then December, and my dad visited the shop on my behalf, and was then told after further ado (they didn’t seem to know which laptop was mine) that it was in London as they had to send it off to a specialist). More time passed, and I became increasingly annoyed so decided to seek further advice from Trading Standards, who advised me to send a registered letter asking for the laptop back - repaired or not, and still I did not get a reply, so they then steppin in for me.

They had trouble initially getting in contact, however then returned to me, saying that the laptop could not be repaired, and I was to contact the people concerned to arrange getting my laptop back.

Eventually, on the 20th Jan (bearing in mind they had my laptop from 13th October) I received a phonecall to say that they were going to drop my laptop off, but there would be a £25 charge - for shipping to the specialist. I wasn’t entirely comfortable with this, so I had written them out a cheque, and my laptop was returned.

I tried to switch it on, and it is now in a worse state of repair than when I had given it to them, and after talking to my dad, he said I should cancel the cheque due to the advert on their website - no fix, no free, and also, their failure to communicate - i.e. they did not even ask my permission/mention anything about charges to send it to a specialist.

I since cancelled the cheque, and have just had the man appear back at my door in what I would deem to be a fairly threatening manner. He asked me for the money and I said I didn’t have it, and he said I could take the easy way or the hard way??!! What he meant by this I don’t know.

He said I have been fraudulent in writing a cheque and then cancelling it, but I do not consider this to be so, and think I have every right to cancel it, due to the trouble I have had with the company.

Is there any sort of action they can take against me? I am so annoyed that they had the audacity to ask me for money after 3 months of me trying to track the laptop down, and eventually getting it back in a worse condition that I had given it to them.
Also, they claim to have tried to contact me, but despite providing them with 3 telephone numbers (2 of which have voicemail), I have never received any of these alleged calls they claim to have made.

The man who dropped off the laptop said that he had been to my house twice before - again, I had asked them to phone prior to visiting so that I could ensure that someone was home.
They claim the laptop is unrepairable due to a faulty motherboard, yet they advertise on their website:

"we install processors, memory, motherboards…. can supply replacements or upgrade components"

"No fix No Fee"
"Free Quotes"
"Not Happy? No Charge"

Also, I was not told about the charge until 15 mins before they were going to drop it off to me - again, after someone else was supposed to have contacted me to tell me this.
I also find it a bit strange that it took me 3 months to get an answer from them, and get my laptop back, yet they seem to be able to reach me fine when it suits them.

I’m more concerned that someone knocked on your door. Did this man mention that he was calling from this computer shop? Get back to trading standards and report this immediately. Nobody should be visiting you at your premises and demanding money at your doorstep.

They are allowed to charge you, because there’s an element of service involved in doing anything from tightening a screw to rebuilding the machine from scratch. These "no fix, no fee" offers are nothing more than a gimmick. If you read the small print, there are bound to be some conditions attached to this.

where can i download notes on Computer Repairs?

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by admin

i want to know some basic skill to repair computers.

Okay i’ll tell you what i know, what i mainly do on computers i am asked to fix.

First off, Cleaning the junk
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Ccleaner Deletes all their old internet history, Temp files. All the garbage on their computer this will clean up the harddrive and help the computer to run faster, in ccleaner there is a registry tab click on hit and hit Scan, then fix all errors. usually finds 100-500 Errors on the computers i scan

Next is to scan for Viruses
http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Malware bytes anti malware is free and easy to use, one of the best anti Virus programs i know of. Its not a constant protection its just a scan to find possible infection carrying files and Already infected areas of the computer and remove them. Last time i used this was on one of my best friends GF’s computer. Scanned it and came up with 150 viruses. lol one guy i helped came up with 500+.
Now if your helping someone and just want to give them a working computer and walk away one of the highest rated Anti Virus programs is (no NOT avg) its Avira.
http://www.free-av.com/
It will bring up a little message saying its detected a virus if you’ve got one, just tell them if they ever see it hit deny access. Simple as that. This is nice because its 100% free and Works As good if not better then Norton and McAfee, It also uses very little ram so it won’t slow your computer like Norton and McAfee do.

Fixing the Startup Issues.
Okay just about every program you install over the life of your computer wants to start WITH your computer. This will Cause a Swarm of information when you first start and often causes a ridiculous amount of lag. This can be fixed by windows simply, I also have a program. but for now the windows way. Go to the start Menu, And click on RUN. Type in
MSCONFIG
this will bring up Microsoft configuration thinger. lol Click on the tab labeled STARTUP you can look thru and decide what you want to disable or Just hit DISABLE all, Everything in the list is not Vital To your computer’s well being. In this list will be things like AIM, MSN, etc garbage you don’t need slowing you down. Of course this dose not permanently stop them from starting, For instance aim always trys to start when you start your computer, so if you disable it now, and then later use the program, it will try an start with your computer again. This is where my program comes in
http://www.disablestartup.com/
Disable Startup Is simple, install it and hit on the bottom start with windows, now up top tell it to not allow anything from this point on to start with Windows Do not give warning, This is very good If the person you’re helping isn’t so great with computers it will just stop EVERYTHING and lets them not worry about it, They will just have to open it by themselves if they want it.

Last but not least some computers you come across are to far gone to fix, The best thing to do with them is to just to a Fresh Reinstall of windows, You can either go the legal way of buying the operating system or torrent it, Im not endorsing any illegal activities just stating your options. (must say or they’ll ban me… AGAIN.. -_-)
use Alcohol 120% for Burning any ISO’s (digital Images) you have.
now all that i’ve told you so far, if i was to go into detail of how to get a Operating system and Install a new one on someones computer would take up atleast as much if not more uhm Paragraphs. So i’ll Assume you know a bit and leave you with a few pointers. (if you don’t understand what im talking about don’t worry about it) When your installing the Operating system they’ll ask you if you want to Quick Format or Full Reformat the Harddrive. Quick does not delete the garbage they may have had on the harddrive before, So say they used 50gb of their 100gb harddrive, if you do a Quick Format they’re only going to be able to use the 50gb remaining, the FULL reformat Erases everything on the harddrive and starts fresh, But Can take a while, as for mine being 360gb it takes upto 2hours to completely reformat it.
Once you have the operating system installed You’ll need to install drivers.
download this disk using a BitTorrent client
http://btjunkie.org/torrent/75000-drivers-for-Windows-2000-XP-and-Vista/679645c72bcfc75d28f788beee73fe59d0a4e8f694e7
its a ISO image filled with 75000 Drivers, all free all legal. Drivers let you computer Recognize things. Graphics drivers, Ethernet Drivers(for internet) etc all of which you very much need this CD makes it simple. once you’ve installed the operating system go to Start, hit control Panel and go to System. goto Hardware tab and click on Device manager, now if any drivers are out of place They’ll appear with Yellow Question marks i believe.. Anyway, mm this is somewhat shady in the back of my mind. lol Double click or Right click on it and hit Update Drivers. i believe, They’ll ask you if you want to search on the internet for drivers and tick no and click Next. i belie
